NOVEMBER 4: Internet and Copyright

At my school, we just had professional development on copyright. In that course and search that I have done I learned some things about copyrights and copyright laws. I was aware that there were copyright laws. I knew that there are some exceptions to the law but I did not know to what extent. One thing I learned was that as a student, there is no time limit to using works but as a teacher, you only have two years to use copied work. Another interesting fact I learn was that teacher are suppose to put disposal dates on those works. I recalled something about how the internet has made it so easy to break copyright laws. I think that many teachers have probably broken copyright laws on a regular and did not even know it.

The Internet has bought many great things: emailing, chatting, downloading music and videos and paying bills online. Internet has bought about a new thing called cyberbullying. I have heard of cyberbullying but I did not realized that it was really such an issue. I found a number of sites against cyberbullying and found and heard stories about things people have said and done.

Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and other social sites are great way to interact with friends and family but if not careful with the information we put on it. It can be used against us. There a internet stalkers and people who prey on young children using facebook and the information they place on these social sites. SmartPhones and other phones with internet access has also allowed people to surf the net and all times. The newest thing I heard was something about how these SmartPhones now have a program that can calculate the make-up of your face and tag all pictures of you that are available on the internet. Anything I post on the internet and facebook, I do not mind people seeing however, I don't even think I like the fact that I can be tracked in any picture out there. (Can that be a violation of my privacy... or did I sign some type of wavier that I didn't realize I agreed to because I didn't read the fine print. LOL)

How many people do you know or think have does this??? Students especially? I know I have.

  1. In completing the Internet Safety project, I also found sites where kids told their survivor stories of Internet stalkers. It was scary to see how kids were sucked into everything this stranger had to say. I know middle and high school can be very tough and emotional times and it is easy to see how kids want to rebel against their parents and do whatever they want. The do not realize the dangers or the consequences to their actions until something actually happens.
I think teaching kids at a young age and sharing these real-life experiences can help them to stay safe and to protect themselves on the Internet.

  2. Professional development on the Copyright Act sounds like something the staff at my school could probably benefit from. So many teachers, break laws without thinking twice about it. It would probably be beneficial for everyone to hear what the possible consequences could be for breaking these laws.

Cyberbullying really is becoming a big issue for our students. The great aspects of the Internet definitely outweigh the bad, but we have to become more diligent about teaching our students Internet safety and etiquette.

It is true that anything posted on the Internet can be used against us or in ways we didn't expect. I guess that is kind of a scary reality check especially when Facebook is such a common communication tool that most people use.

Overall, Internet safety and copyright information is really important and I definitely feel like my eyes have been opened!

  3. Doing research on these areas was definitely eye-opening.

While reading your posts I thought about Face Book and how the kids use it. The cyber bullying is a huge deal when you think about all the social networking. Seriously, these kids are probably not checking on the privacy settings as often as they should and allowing all kinds of people to view their info (hopefully in most cases mom and dad are on this). Also, do you remember how many people you went through in school that were friends one moment and then not the next. Do you think they are de-friending each other left and right or just righting ugly things to each other for others to see. Also, with this new "places" FB feature, kids' "enemies" could go to where they have "checked-in" and bully them there, too. AWFUL!

It is going to be important right now to teach students about internet safety and the effects of cyber-bullying. This is a pretty serious matter.

  4. The idea of Cyber-bullying is scary. People are killing themselves over this. The issue is more serious than I thought it was. What might not bother you might bother someone else and push them to a limits. Are you ready to take on the responsibility and consequences of your actions?

Parents have to start early. I know Facebook is the big thing that eveeeerrrryone is doing. Should a child have a facebook? Are parents monitoring their use and what they are doing? Parents need to be more involved in what their kids are doing? As teachers we can only do so much with. What happened to the whole, it takes a village thing.
