Thing 21 Slideshare

Slideshare how a a great way to share your presentations with other teachers. Slideshare also serves a way for teachers to upload information for students to review classroom notes. The other cool thing about Slideshare is that you are able to pull other peoples presentations that may related to what you are teaching. I didm y powerpoint using Mac and i noticed that when I did upload my powerpoint into slide share the font and font size changed. I had to make several adjustments. I thought it was really cool doing the presentation. I will have to play around with it some more to learn what will cause the least amount of changes. None-the-less my slideshare is attached below.

Thing 20 Jing Screencasting

Screen casting is a great way to teach people how to do things. It reminds me of Illuminate Live which is a program my school system uses to hold county-wide staff meetings in the home of your school. Jing is a great program that can be used to help instruct staff on how to use new programs.

Jing could also be used in the classroom to teach students to how use a program and or create a project.

I found Jing very easy to use. However, I have to record my tutorial several times. I tried to write a script but I add libbed several times. Hey Everything can’t be perfect the first time. :) Jing can be used to instruct students on how to use a program on the internet. It can be used to instruct students how to do a specific skill in PowerPointa project One thing I did realize with Jing is that there is a time limit as to how long your recording can be. I wonder if the time can be extend some. None-the-less. I enjoyed using Jing. Here is my screencast.

THING 19 GOOGLE DOCS

GoogleDocs serves a great way for someone who does not have access to Microsoft Word. Being that you can save your documents on the online based system you are able to access your files anywhere a long as you have access to the Internet. I know someone is using GoogleDocs to keep notes on things that her boss is doing that she does not agree with. These actions could potentially get her fired but she was advised to keep notes on GoogleDocs so in case something happened she would have immediate access to her records and they would not be accessed or tied to her work computer.

GoogleDocs also makes it easier for teacher to save and share their presentations and files with others without have to attach them and again they can be accessed from anywhere.

When I uploaded my own file to GoogleDocs, it appears to be the same. It looks the same and I am able to adjust it and makes changes in the same way as the Word program.

I could not figure out how to share the url for the for the spreadsheet.

Thing 18

Exploring Ning/Classroom 2.0, It reminded me somewhat of Twitter with the exception that Classroom 2.0 seems to be strictly directed to teachers. I seems to be a great site for teachers to collaborate and share information about teaching. I did find some recommendations for sties to try with my kids like www.roythezebra.com and http://www.curriki.org, which reminds me some what of discovery education. The site serves as a blog for you to post not only ideas but also concerns and as a away to get suggestions like The Paperless Classroom, where the writer wanted more suggestions as to how he can use other technologies to keep their classroom paperless. I could use this site to find suggestions on how to implement technology in my classroom.

THING 17- videosharing

I find myself constantly looking up videos on YouTube. I have created playlist for listing to music and videos while at home. I have also used YouTube for comedy and humor as well. I have never heard of TeacherTube until this class. I got tired of looking at the advertisement on TeacherTube. It started to become a little aggravating. Maybe I was looking alot of bad videos but the volume on my of hte videos I saw were very low. I had a hard time hearing many of them. Users have to be aware of the sounds. My students are finishing up plant and animal life cycles. One of the videos I chose to upload shows a chicken hatching from an egg.

Thing 14 Delicious

Delicious is an awesome way to organize sites. I find myself opening up a number of windows on my browser for fear of losing them. I like that Delicious allows you to organize, tag and share sites that you have found with other teachers. There have been a number of time where teacher and myself have shared sties but we would give key words as to how we located the site. Delicious would allow them to have automatic access to sites that I have found I have found and can share with them.

I decided to bookmark some sites for butterflies. I also decided to bookmark some math sites and science sites that are interactive for my children. I found this really cool site called www.spellingcity.com. This would be great for many of my students to practice while in class or at the computer lab.

ITEC 7430- Thing 12 Exploring online tools

For my first grade students, I like www.blabberize.com. I think that this would be a great way for the students to express themselves. My class was outside playing one day and I decided to take pictures of them. We later were focusing narrative writings so I decided to show my students the picture and I asked them to write a quick narrative describing what they were doing. Blabberize would give them the opportunity to add their voice to their one individual image and talk about what they are doing. I think that this would engage the students very much and I think that they would get a kick out of hearing and seeing themselves speak on the picture.

ITEC 7430- Internet Safety

For me, when it comes to use the internet to teach, internet safety is a big concern.
Many schools and most inappropriate sites blocked however thing still slip by. Teachers have to teach their students proper and safe internet etiquette. You would think that that would be good enough however while using the internet especially in school, teachers need to continuously monitor their students will they are using the internet. Like the example in the book about typing “legs” instead of “legos” even accidentally students can pull up things they should not be looking at. So constant monitoring is important. I think that it is all important that parents are made aware of just how hazardous internet usage can be. Take for example Facebook and Myspace, if settings are not set in the privacy section correctly then everyone can view all of the users information.

I hope I am doing this correct. I initially said that i liked the idea of using Flickr to help teach in my classroom but now I am not so sure. I definitely need to see about playing around with this a little more.

ITEC7430 Thing 9 Creative Commons

I have seen logos and websites with “C” however, I cannot recall seeing the “cc” on them. I was not aware that as soon as your pen left a piece of paper that is is automatically copyrighted. I was taught that you needed you have your work copyrighted through a process.

I knew that works that were copyrighted could be used on limits for educational purposes. I myself have used digital images for teaching purposes. I have shown video clips in my classroom before for teaching purposes as well. I guess if you consider me posting my pictures on Facebook, then yes I have shared content on the web. I have uploaded pictures on Kodak Photo Gallery as well but al this is for personal use.

I label my classroom and I use picture within the labels to help my students identify and associate the words with the pictures. The question asking “Who owns my teaching materials?” confuses me a little. I mean anything I make, I would assume is mine... correct? But would an example of “cc” be the file folder materials I can cut up and use to create file folder games. Would that be an example of Co-owned materials?

ITEC7430 Thing 7

After viewing several different Wikis, I am beginning to see and understand how I could use Wikis in my classroom. Even if only for the simple fact of introducing my students to a different type of technology, it s a step in the right direction of 21st century technology. As I have said before viewing different Wikis has given my new ideas on how I could use Wikis in my classroom.

The biggest challenge I found was trying to get ideas for lower grade being that I teach 1st grade. I like the idea of simply posing a question and having a goal each month for school year (http://monsonclassroom.wikispaces.com/)

I like posing the question on how school now is different from school of the past. I like that within the discussion they students had subtopics for individuals to post on different places. That was a great idea. (http://schoolsthen.wikispaces.com/)

I did not care for the site Go West on the Oregon Trial. Granted it was for the 3rd grade it just seemed like to much for me as an adult. (lol) Ok seriously.... After reading the teacher reflection, it seemed as though the teacher really enjoyed the project as well as the students from what she said. It sounded like every group had a some part scanning and posting information. One thing that caught me was when she said that the students had such a desire to have everything so perfect that the project required a lot of one-on-one tutoring. The site does seem to be set up effectively. In the reflection, the teacher said that she would do it all over again but at the end of the reflection there were two names at the end. I wondering how much time was put into making the project as I am the only teacher of 20 first graders. How long would it really take me to do something like that? (http://gowest.wikispaces.com/)

I like that Vicki Davis grouped her students and assigned each group a word. I like that she gave them guidelines and criteria on what they could and could not do under certain circumstances.

I can see myself using Wikis in my classroom, but I would definitely like to become more familiar with them. One idea that came to my mind. I heard that the fifth graders at my school were writing persuasive papers about uniforms at the school and whether they should have to wear them or not. “The word” is most of the students do not want uniforms. I think that rather than just having their thoughts on papers how would to students feel about doing a Wiki on the topic. If given criteria and guidelines..... I wonder where would it go.

ITEC7430 Wikis

I think that the video titled Wikis in Plain English by gave the perfect explanation of what a wikis is and how it can be used. I liked that the video gave an example of how email is not sufficient in getting information across and the fact that it overloads your inbox with a plethora emails. I like that the video used a list for gear needed for a camping trip as an example of how a wiki could be used. I thought of a wiki being used only for news and research information. I did not even take into consideration creating a list. Wikis allow for individuals to communicate their thoughts in an organized fashion. I am looking forward to learning more about them

ITEC 7430 wikipedia

I have used Wikipedia before but I never went beyond what I saw on the screen. I never noticed that there were tabs on the top of the scene where you could go into discussion and history of the page and information. I always went straight in to reading. I remember being told by my teachers that we could not use wikipedia as a legitimate resource. I chose to look up the Egyptian Riots. I was talking to a friend who told me that he was having to do research on current events in Egypt right before all of this happened. I think that Wikipedia serves as a great place to get information on a subject but I think that it is a good idea to go back information as well as other sources because of the fact that so many people can go edit and add information and thoughts.

There is a lot of information on this page but I feel that the wiki on the riots in Egypt gives the opportunity for others to put out information that the news (T.V.) is not showing. I am not saying that all of the information on the wiki is accurate but it allows for the individuals reading it to see other sides, points and views.

This site was established January 25, 2011. I was unable to locate how many times the page was edited but I did see that is was last modified about an hour ago.

Well as you can see I obviously like football. I choose to follow the RSS feed on football because unlike many women, I actually played women’s football and I enjoy watching football period. There is a lot going on with the NFL and I want to stay up with what is going on.

I chose to follow this podcast on Afropop because I have taken a liking to music of many cultures and genres. I am of Brazilian decent, I have recently taken interested in learning about my South American heritage and culture. I am involved in Afro-Cuban Style Salsa dancing and I find myself listening to Afro, Latin, and Reggae music. As I read information on this Podcast it talks about the music, history and other things in the Afropop culture. In seems to be aligned with my interest and the things I have been doing and wanting to do.

ITEC7430 RSS Discussion

As I was reading about RSS, I found myself thinking about twitter. Then “BAM” there it it on page 81. There are more than a number of ways to use RSS. As stated in the book, RSS serves as a “perfect tool” when it comes to learning how to “manage, analyze and synthesize multiple streams of simultaneous information.” Based on that, I think that students having knowledge of how to use RSS would be a definite plus in the learning process.

Trying to think off the top of my head about how I could use RSS in my classroom with a bunch of first graders, is really hard. I can’t imagine registering them for email accounts and having a bunch of angry parents. So maybe I could create an account and use RSS as a group/classroom activity and use the Activboard to display and talk about it. But I can’t think of a topic off the top of my head for lower elementary.

1. Do you agree with the statement above? Why or Why not? Include specific examples from Chapter 1 or other resources to support your answer.

I do not completely agree with this statement. I think that It mostly depends of how the children are raised but then again we are living in a world where children are coming straight out the womb talking and using computer based cell phones and playing video games. I feel that because of this, children are using their brains differently and as a result…. Their way of learning is different. The way their brains are stimulate are much different from the way children thought 20 years ago.

I do not think that the current way of teaching is a risk of irrelevance. Read/Write Web can be used a resource to help assist in the learning process of these children. Because many children are already using computers and other social networks, I think that using Read/Write Web in an educational teaching setting will help to enhance the learning process and keep the students interest.

I do agree with the statement. In order teaching effectively using these Read/Write Web networks, we need to become familiar with them ourselves. While some individuals do not wish to learn about this stuff, others are and we are learning as we go and teach our students. We just have to be willing to take some tie to learn about new learning skills so that we can teach the students. Sometimes we may even find the students teaching us. We just have to be willing to learn in all aspects and from everyone. I am interested in learning more about wikis and audio/video castings.

ITEC 7430 Thing 3

Blogging forces individuals to get involved. You (the reader) becomes and plays an active role int he involvement. The blogs were written on all different levels. There was almost no wrong or right way to do them from teachers to students. Everyone was allowed to express their thoughts freely and they became involved by agreeing/disagreeing and even creating stories like the one with the one about the missing duck. With all the blogs, reading and writing are required but the level and accuracy of that reading and writing may be different. While we want our students to write correctly; with the younger grade levels, blogging should not be about how they write but more so what they are writing about. Others being able to contribute with comments to the blogs creates interaction and involvement.
